François-Xavier Devetter

François-Xavier Devetter brings to the editorial board a multidisciplinary perspective in sociology and economics, as well as expertise in quantitative and qualitative methodologies. As the author of numerous articles and books, and a contributor to several collective works, we trust his critical judgment will be accurate and relevant to the articles submitted to RI/IR.

His work focuses on the socio-economics of services considered to be low-skilled or unskilled, particularly in the cleaning, home care and care-related sectors. His aim is to understand the mechanisms that lock these jobs into precarious forms of employment, with low pay and difficult working conditions. He is particularly interested in the issues raised by the transformation of working hours and the evolution of skills.

Pouvez-vous nous parler de deux articles significatifs dans votre carrière?

Ce texte me tient à coeur, car il permet d’illustrer l’intérêt de lier des analyses quantitatives et des travaux qualitatifs d’une manière plus riche que simplement illustrative. L’articulation des deux méthodes permet de faire apparaître notamment la diversité des formes que peuvent revêtir les inégalités sociales dans les emplois de service.

Cette synthèse de nombreux travaux empiriques cherche à leur donner une dimension plus théorique en soulignant comment des politiques publiques et de gestion des ressources humaines « font système ». Pour nous, comprendre cette articulation est important pour envisager des réformes visant à améliorer la qualité des emplois.
