A Column about Labour and Employment Policies

Open Call for Papers

In the last few months, a new column has appeared in Industrial Relations/Industrial Relations (RI/IR). Entitled "Labor and Employment Policies", the column provides the scholarly and professional content concerning work-related and employment law and public policy in Canada and elsewhere.

The new Labour and Employment Policies column is being run by a sub-committee of the journal’s Editorial Board: Professors Sara Slinn (Osgoode Hall Law School, York University), Gilles Trudeau (Faculty of Law, Université de Montréal), Guylaine Vallée (School of Industrial Relations, Université de Montréal) and Pier-Luc Bilodeau (Department of Industrial Relations, Université Laval).

Manuscripts published in the new column are written by academics and leading practitioners. They are typically short polemics of between 3,000-4,000 words, and subject to a truncated anonymous peer review process. The goal is to publish opinions and controversy in short time frames and, thus, follow legislative and jurisprudential developments as closely as possible.

The column appears twice a year, in issues 1 and 3 of the journal, and each edition includes one paper in French and one in English. The articles published in issues 73-3, 74-1, 74-3 and 75-1 are available on the Érudit platform at the following address: https://www.erudit.org/fr/revues/ri/#back-issues.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Labour and Employment Policies

Manuscripts submitted to Relations industrielles/Industrial Relations must be original texts, presented exclusively to the journal, free of copyright and produced solely and exclusively by those noted as  authors cited on a  title page.

They must also :

  • Meet the criteria for publication in a scientific journal (see Scientific evaluation)
  • Fit with the editorial policy of the journal (see Editorial policy) and with the mission statement of the column (see Call for Manuscripts PTE-LEP)

Anonymity

To comply with the peer review process (the double blind evaluation), manuscripts must be free of any information that would allow for the identification of the authors and their institutional affiliation. Accordingly, the identity of the author(s) must not appear in the main body of the text, the bibliography (references must be concealed) or be present in the properties of the electronic file.

Language

Manuscripts must be written in either French or English.

Length

Submitted manuscripts are to be, in WORD format and must be between 3000 to 4000 words, including the following elements:

  • main text
  • footnotes
  • bibliographic references
  • tables and figures (to be sent in a separate document)

Please do not include any images in submitted manuscripts.

With respect to other elements, notably the keywords and the summary, please see details below.

Title

This should be no longer than 120 characters.

Keywords

The manuscript should be accompanied by 4 or 5 keywords. Notably, these should be terms that do not appear in the article’s title and hence increase the scope for referencing.

Summary

A summary of approximately 150 words maximum should be produced and should present the manuscript’s key message argument. After publication, it will be used by aggregators and added to databases.

Authors are requested to provide a summary in either French or English.

Sub-titles

Submitted manuscripts must have decimal numbering to indicate heading levels:

E.g. :      1- For a level 1 title

1.1- For a level 2 title

                                                               1.1.1- For a level 3 title, Etc.

At the time of publishing, this system of numbering will be removed and replaced by the journal`s own style. This approach has the advantage of avoiding the problems of mismatch with several predefined styles.

References (doctrine: books, articles and book chapters)

Manuscript in-text citations will be identified by the name of the author or authors, the year and, where appropriate, the page. These elements will typically be placed within parentheses.

  • Example : (Piketty, 2013 : 427)

For works of more than three authors, the format et al. is accepted for in-text citations. This format will apply throughout the entire text.

For bibliographic references at the end of the text, please follow the instructions listed in the References section.

References for law sources (statutes, regulations, case law, …)

All legal citations must adhere to the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation (McGill Style)

Footnotes

Taking into account the referencing method adopted in the main text, the use of footnotes should be limited.

 Where footnotes do appear, they should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript and placed at the end of every page.

Tables and charts

Their number should also be limited. They should have a title, be clearly presented and numbered consecutively in arabic numerals.

  • Example : Table 1, Figure 1, etc.

Please remove them from your text and send them in a separate WORD document, with numbered pages.

The specific location in the text where they are to be placed should be indicated as follows:

  • Example : Insert table 1 here.

P.S.: Please do not send tables or charts in a picture format

Appendix

The journal does not publish appendices.
